Wilt thou love me, sweet, when my hair is grey
And my cheeks shall have lost their hue?
When the charms of youth shall have passed away,
Will your love as of old prove true?
For the looks may change, and the heart may range,
And the love be no longer fond;
Wilt thou love with truth in the years of youth
And away to the years beyond?
Oh, I love you, sweet, for your locks of brown
And the blush on your cheek that lies —
But I love you most for the kindly heart
That I see in your sweet blue eyes.
For the eyes are signs of the soul within,
Of the heart that is leal and true,
And mine own sweetheart, I shall love you still,
Just as long as your eyes are blue.
For the locks may bleach, and the cheeks of peach
May be reft of their golden hue;
But mine own sweetheart, I shall love you still,
Just as long as your eyes are blue.

word correction
From guest Helen Lamont (contact)
Fourth stanza, second line, the word is actually 'leal' not 'real'.
Definition is found at url:http://www.thefreedictionary.com/leal
From online dictionary: leal - definition of leal by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus ...
[from Old French leial, from Latin lēgālis legal; related to loyal]. leally adv. lealty
Leal is the original word used in the Paterson poem.
(checked and correct from my own books - Von)
Thanks for the pick up Helen.

This is a beautiful write. Sometimes I wonder what may happen when my husband and I get old, what will he think? I guess I will know when the time comes. Beautiful!

I wonder how many people are honest with themselves and state the real reasons they love someone? I wonder how many even know? But I guess that is irrelevant here, I mean, judge the poem as if he did, not with that caustic eye toward doubt, doing we can somewhat appreciate the typical romantic flushes that so many poems over-indulge in. well, not we, me.
Great sentiment, even if it is a little shopworn. -
I've recently been given the whole, complete works of Banjo as a gift and I 'm just so thrilled to have the whole collection of the work of a man I admire so much. this particular poem is a true favourite of mine as it's so different to the majority of his work. No rollicking horse chases, no Mountain bush men - a man in love with a woman and it's beautiful. Von

beautiful
true love never grows old. You still see the young person within. Growing old together is what has been, but it's not always easy to grow old alone. I can relate to this. -
WOW this was beeautiful! it reminded me of a shakespearan sonnet that i had to read in english, only this wasnt in sonnet form, but it was the same stuff,, loving someone in their old age. u wrote this really well, keep up the good work!

So very, very Loving, tender, and beautiful. The words almost caress the reader.....
One little thing.....in the fourth stanza.....
'Of the heart that is leal and true'
Leal? Do you perhaps mean real? I suppose I could be showing my ignorance, and leal could be a perfectly legitimate word I've never heard of.....
This made my heart smile. And made me think of a Love with blue eyes.....so thank you.
Sincerely, Janet

True Lasting Love - Beautiful. Quite a different Banjo Paterson poem but lovely nonetheless.
