If I can stop

If I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain.

  • But...

    while i agree that this is a beautiful expression of giving value to one's life, somehow i think that the intention of the poem isn't as simple as it may seem. Emily Dickinson spent a majority of her life as a recluse, could it really be that she was lamenting her own lifestyle, her distance from the world? Perhaps she felt that she was living in vain by not being able to go out into the world and interact with society and have the opportunity to do all of the things she writes about.

    just food for thought

    what great joy

    This is a true celebration of life and the appreciation of it. A wonderful collection of words that demonstrate a soul of joy and the feelings that one must have to bring the collective kindness of new thinking to mankind. Good stuff

    The poem is marvellous, with its beautiful thought-process, esp the lines-'Or help one fainting robin
    Unto his nest again!'

    seems like she is striving to give a meaning to her valueless existence... so yearns to share her life with another person of similar pain ...

    Influencial

    In this simple little poem, Emily capitalized on the idea of finding value in life by accomplishing even the smallest of deeds on this earth.

    This is one of those sort of poems that help me strive to find contentment in doing good - even seemingly 'small' good - on this chaotic planet.

    Pretty, and very true. They are tons of people that are inclined by the same views that Emily has, that if they helped one person in their lifetime, then Life was worth living or such. I am agree to a point, I guess I am only being Selfish. I really like this piece so does my boyfriend: AndyHarper.
