Afterglow

A magic wrought of dying dreams
 A wizard light that creeps and glows;
Painting grey hills and sluggish streams
 In tints of gold and rose

Staining with fire the cherry-snow
 Lighting our hearts with sudden flame
As if the love of long ago
 Back from its ashes came

Rose-flushed and radiant everything
 And joy and hope are born anew;
Even the darting swallow's wing
 Has caught its glowing hue

Ah! swift it dies from hill and plain…
 Be wise dear heart and let me go;
Not love that lit our hearts again -
 Only it's afterglow!

    Vividly descriptive

    This is a very good poem for an author of any age. For a child of eleven years it is amazingly prodigious.
    The analogy of a dying red sunset to a waned love is perfectly expressed. I love the romantic choice of words which Ms.Crist employs.

    Hello Sally - I thought I'd let you know that Alice Guerin Crist is our poet of the week beginning today. It was hard choosing just 7 of her poems to showcase but here they are.
    One of your favourites 'Afterglow' is first one up.

    She was only eleven years old?!?! That's unbelievable! This is so insightful and full of maturity that one would never believe that this is written by one still in her youth. Excellent work. I'm glad that this was the featured poem today. I really enjoyed...

    At the time I added this poem last year I had no idea that Alice was just 11 years old when she wrote this. A maturity beyond her years. However now I know more about this amazing lady - a large part of her maturity is due to her parents love of literature - to which she dedicates her book 'when Rody came to Ironbark'
    I'm going through this book poem by poem to add to OP and it's a labour of love for me. Each poem is unique as is her talent.
