A House by the Water and Peacocks on the Grass

O a lady in Pennsylvania, lovely Nancy, you'll be! —
Sweet my lady blow away and blow away!
There never was a lady so fair upon the sea —
Then away to Pennsylvania, away, love, with me!
Sweet my lady blow away!

O a gold ring in Pennsylvania, lovely Nancy, you'll find —
Sweet my lady blow away and blow away!
There never was a lady so lovely and kind:
Then away to Pennsylvania, away with the wind —
Sweet my lady blow away!

For a lady in Pennsylvania, lovely Nancy, you'll pass!
Sweet my lady blow away and blow away!
With a house by the water and peacocks on the grass —
O we'll drink to Pennsylvania — landloard, fill up the glass!
Sweet my lady blow away!

Notes

From SAILOR WITH BANJO, by Hamish Maclaren, published by The MacMillian Co., NY, © 1930, pp. 17-18.

Maclaren added a note about what inspired this ballad:

"I am indebted to two anonymous Irish writers for the first line of this ballad…I found the line in a book of old Irish airs and song-fragments, and felt compelled to complete the ballad…"
