The moonlight fades from flower and rose
And the stars dim one by one;
The tale is told, the song is sung,
And the Fairy feast is done.
The night-wind rocks the sleeping flowers,
And sings to them, soft and low.
The early birds erelong will wake:
'T is time for the Elves to go.
O'er the sleeping earth we silently pass,
Unseen by mortal eye,
And send sweet dreams, as we lightly float
Through the quiet moonlit sky;—
For the stars' soft eyes alone may see,
And the flowers alone may know,
The feasts we hold, the tales we tell;
So't is time for the Elves to go.
From bird, and blossom, and bee,
We learn the lessons they teach;
And seek, by kindly deeds, to win
A loving friend in each.
And though unseen on earth we dwell,
Sweet voices whisper low,
And gentle hearts most joyously greet
The Elves where'er they go.
When next we meet in the Fairy dell,
May the silver moon's soft light
Shine then on faces gay as now,
And Elfin hearts as light.
Now spread each wing, for the eastern sky
With sunlight soon shall glow.
The morning star shall light us home:
Farewell! for the Elves must go.

High quality poetry, wonderful words being used to describe the fairy song> It captivated my imagination in the wonderful fairyland of dancing elves and fairy merriment under the soft light of the moon!

Isn't it nice to read these old poetic forms, with their rhyme scheme and metre just right? Great rhyming too. Wonderful to see.

Upon reading this again, and thinking of Thoreau, I remembered that he ended the book "Walden" with the line:
"The sun is but a morning star."
Or something similar to that. I don't have my copy with me just now to be sure it's an exact quote. Interesting parallel, eh? I wonder who was quoting whom.....

Such a beautiful poem takes you back to child hood and some of those magical moments of imagination.

Well it is really a great work involving the whole creations and its values of life in terms of the thoughts compatible with this great nature too. The thoughts are very true and very deeply touching the story of our life through and through giving a message of our relationship with this creation. The beauty of the write lies in ts musicality of the truth which are just immortal and long lasting that even after years after it maintains its impact over readers. The flow of the write is very impressive and to the point too. The poetic flow and its rythemic structure also attracts the readers mind too. I really appreciate this work. It is really inspiring like a fragrant flower. prabhudayal khattar

There are tears in my eyes! This poem was absolutely, amazingly, and truly astoundingly beautiful and perfect in every single aspect. This has now become my favorite poem.....and before I had favorites, still do - but this.....THIS is THE ONE!
I can only wonder at the piece of poetry that could knock this off it's pedestal within me.....
I also wonder if those familiar with Thoreau think, as I do, that perhaps his presence is felt somewhere within this piece?
Words from a woman long dead capture my heart and imagination in a future very distant from the life she lived. *Sigh* If only I could do the very same. Therein lies my dream.....
