The Tiger

The tiger, on the other hand,
Is kittenish and mild,
And makes a pretty playfellow
For any little child.
And mothers of large families
(Who claim to common sense)
Will find a tiger well repays
The trouble and expense.

Ah, you don't see Belloc much these days. He comes from the days when craft and wit mattered, And he always kept his sense of humor, even in the face of hard times. I've always liked these lines from his poem "On His Books":

When I am dead, I hope it may be said:
'His sins were scarlet, but his books were read.'
