Behind The Gates Of The Wealthy

zhu men jiu rou chou
lu you dong si gu

Behind the gates of the wealthy
food lies rotting from waste
Outside it's the poor
who lie frozen to death

I feel quite strongly that the poet is saying that 'the people are also rotting from waste - perhaps the translator felt that it should be toned down for senstive folk who read poetry. Either way this poem could have been written yesterday.

It's probably a stretch to praise it for anything other than it's bravery. I assume Du Fu's views weren't met with any pleasure from those in power, and from the little I just read of his life, it sounds as if he often wrote of his displeasure of social and political issues.

Amazing how this Chinese poet could write this poem in 775 when he died in 770.

    OOPS!
Obviously a typo slipped in here. We've removed the date until we can find the real one! MOD TEAM

Wonderful poem, the image is clear and challenging. It makes me see the scene as Buddha did, when he was still a prince, and had to leave the palace to find out why.

The majority of the wealthy have worked all their lives and have earned their wealth. Waste is a result of ignorance, waste can be rerouted to the poor. If we knew how. The majority of the poor choose not to work or seak self improvement. There are alot of free programs in America,Some Initiative would help( to control thier lives better.
