Chaap Tilak

Chhap tilak sab cheeni ray mosay naina milaikay
Chhap tilak sab cheeni ray mosay naina milaikay
Prem bhatee ka madhva pilaikay
Matvali kar leeni ray mosay naina milaikay
Gori gori bayyan, hari hari churiyan
Bayyan pakar dhar leeni ray mosay naina milaikay
Bal bal jaaon mein toray rang rajwa
Apni see kar leeni ray mosay naina milaikay
Khusrau Nijaam kay bal bal jayyiye
Mohay Suhaagan keeni ray mosay naina milaikay
Chhap tilak sab cheeni ray mosay naina milaikay

Translation
You've taken away my looks, my identity, by just a glance.
By making me drink the wine of love-potion,
You've intoxicated me by just a glance;
My fair, delicate wrists with green bangles in them,
Have been held tightly by you with just a glance.
I give my life to you, Oh my cloth-dyer,
You've dyed me in yourself, by just a glance.
I give my whole life to you Oh, Nijam,
You've made me your bride, by just a glance.

    TRANSLATION NOT GOOD

    From guest GUEST (contact)
Actually the translation has been done word by word and the soul is not there. Its really bad. Can hardly inspire any one to know and read Khushrau.

    Mod Message:
the translation is a continous one but not as bad as you believe. A more appropriate translation will be added soon.

Mind blowing work. Amir Khusro was a Great Poet. And the people who have posted and translated it here have done a great job. Here are two lines of the Poet "kheer pakai jatan se, charkha diya chala ; aya kutta kha gaya, tu baithi dhol baja" . These lines were composed on the spot when four ladies asked the Poet to compose a poem from these words : kheer, charkha, kutta and dhol.

    Devine love

Ameer Khusro is famous for his Hindi lyrical songs like this one and for his very beautiful Persian love poems; "Ghazals". He is the one who invented many Ragas and musical instruments including "tabla" which is an essential part of Hindi music which produces the beats.
The above cited poem is also a popular love song.

Indeed. Beautiful song, isn't it? Khusro was a very very patriotic and secular poet. His secularism shows in this particular song. The chaap belongs to muslims and the tilak belongs to hindus. He uses both. "Chaap tilak sab cheeni". Beautiful! It is particularly enjoyable in the voice of Begum Abida Parveen.
