Everything is black and gold,
Black and gold, to-night:
Yellow pumpkins, yellow moon
Yellow candlelight;
Jet-black cats with golden eyes
Shadows black as ink,
Firelight blinking in the dark
With a yellow blink
Black and gold, black and gold
Nothing in between-
When the world turns black and gold
Then it's Halloween!

We learned this poem as a song in elementary school. Every year at Halloween, my sister and I (both now in our 40's) phone one another and sing it, then say goodbye. I have taught the song to all my children. I hope they pass is on to their children, when they have them. -

I have loved this poem for many years. In 1963, I memorized it, and recited it in our Halloween pagent at Dennis McKenna elementary school in Oxnard, Ca. I have recited it to my children, thier friends, and now my grand children. Each year as we finish carving our pumpkins, we turn out the lights, and as we light each candle and the room becomes illuminated in black and gold, I recite this poem. It is a fun ritual at our house, one my children and grand children will carry on for many years. Thank you so much -
Reciting Black and Gold

My sister, Cindy, and I had to learn this poem when we attended Remington Elementary School. Whew, that was a few years ago and neither one could remember all of the lines. Finally, I can send it to her and say, "I was right: 'Black and gold, black and gold (Nothing in between) - we both were unsure of that line. Thank you! -
