Did Not

'Twas a new feeling - something more
Than we had dared to own before,
Which then we hid not;
We saw it in each other's eye,
And wished, in every half-breathed sigh,
To speak, but did not.

She felt my lips' impassioned touch -
'Twas the first time I dared so much,
And yet she chid not;
But whispered o'er my burning brow,
'Oh, do you doubt I love you now?'
Sweet soul! I did not.

Warmly I felt her bosom thrill,
I pressed it closer, closer still,
Though gently bid not;
Till - oh! the world hath seldom heard
Of lovers, who so nearly erred,
And yet, who did not.

    Le Flash

    From guest Nirobi (contact)
    Ive personally always believed that the poem is a reflection on "love at first sight" or "le flash" as the frogs say; rather than about a specific person. I think its a generic reference to that rare love connection that sometimes only happens once n your life; if ever! But is so intense and strong that its doomed from the beginning, to end as fast as it started...because a love like that isnt meant to be kept or possessed. The first paragraph noting the mutual attraction acknowledged without words. The second paragrah representing the relationship, passionate and honest. The third expressing the immediate loss felt once he realised that no matter how close they became, they would be physically incapable of truly becoming one. ...but it probably doesn't actually mean that ha ha

    I got out of this poem, the passion of two people that are in love, and are alone for the first time, maybe just married. I liked it

    This is lovely and very delicately spoken. I love the dexterous use of repetition. It retains the personal intimate feel of the event, and doesn't trespass upon the feelings of the personal.
