The Rainy Day

The day is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains,and the wind is never weary;
The vine still clings to the mouldering wall,
But at every gust the dead leaves fall,
And the day is dark and dreary.

My life is cold, and dark, and dreary;
It rains,and the wind is never weary;
My thoughts still cling to the mouldering past,
But the hopes of youth fall thick in the blast,
And the days are dark and dreary.

Be still, sad heart, and cease repining;
Behind the clouds is the sun still shining;
Thy fate is the common fate of all,
Into each life some rain must fall,
Some days must be dark and dreary.

    The Rainy Day

    From guest Kaitlin (contact)
    This has always been one of my favorite of Longfellow's works. It comes to mind on each rainy day.

  • Until today I never knew the origins of that phrase
    Into each life some rain must fall
    Now I know HWL penned it in this poem which though at first may seem gloomy does end witha ray of hope.
    Behind the clouds is the sun still shining
    YES it is

    One of my faves. Not every day is sunshiny and full of laughter. People die, get in accidents, lose their jobs, etc. But the sun still shines and writers add lines. Rain also brings growth!

    Longfellow had a knack at parallelism. Because the genre of poetry that I am fondest of is "Inspirational", this poem is a conerstone to my work. I've always enjoyed the proverbial voice of the classics.

    What a splendid wise old piece to bring back to the light! I remember this one from my High School Years, and NO I am not saying how long ago that was!

    "Into each life some rain must fall" - don't know if this is the first appearance of this line, but it is truly about the only part of this poem that I like. Even the old classics tend to bore me, sometimes. I know many people consider this a great poem, but, I am convinced that many pieces written by some of these men are just common poems given weight by heavy bylines...

    This is my absolute favorite poem of Henry's. It speaks so true of what a depressing day can feel like, but it also tells you that days must be like this because it is a part of life...
