The radiance of the star that leans on me
Was shining years ago. The light that now
Glitters up there my eyes may never see,
And so the time lag teases me with how
Love that loves now may not reach me until
Its first desire is spent. The star's impulse
Must wait for eyes to claim it beautiful
And love arrived may find us somewhere else.

I first saw this poem on The Underground in London in 1989, and memorized it quickly during that tube ride, so that I could get back to my hotel and write it down, so that I would remember it forever. -

The radiance of this poem Has just reached the heart of me, And I am so grateful It did not find me somewhere else. -
Her works=A buffet of exquisite poetics
Portions of this poem remind me of a movie about late love, Ladies in Lavender, starring Maggie Smith and her friend Dame Judi Dench. I like how this poem seems to loop within itself. Jennings is a sheer delight to read, and I would combine her with the works of Jean Garrigue, P.K. Page, Andre Gide's The Fruit of the Earth and one poem by William Allingham ("The Ruined Chapel) for a day of poetic feasting.
