Palanquin Bearers

Lightly, O lightly we bear her along,
 She sways like a flower in the wind of our song;
 She skims like a bird on the foam of a stream,
 She floats like a laugh from the lips of a dream.
 Gaily, O gaily we glide and we sing,
 We bear her along like a pearl on a string.

 Softly, O softly we bear her along,
 She hangs like a star in the dew of our song;
 She springs like a beam on the brow of the tide,
 She falls like a tear from the eyes of a bride.
 Lightly, O lightly we glide and we sing,
 We bear her along like a pearl on a string.

    it's actually been written about the beauty of the palanquin rather than the bride in the palanquin... it's the palanquin that's been personnified... each time, the pleasantness of the gentle movement of the palanquin has been vividly portrayed by the use of metaphors n similes.....

    This poem is more like a song that might have been part of the bearers' entertainment kit. In reading the comment that was posted in 2005, I read up how palanquins were used. The following site, http://www.kamat.com/kalranga/transport/palanquins/palanquins.htm, leads me to believe that indeed this poem reflects the entertainment aspect of the bearers, not the person inside the palanquin. What is nice about it is that the song could actually be a form of "brown nosing" to the person being carried. lol.
    This poem, and others written by Naidu, seem to be standard poems that are taught in India.
    It is nice that a picture is shown with this poem.

    In the poem Palanquin bearers, is the poet talking about palanquin or the bride. There are two schools of thought that 1. the poet describes about the palanquin 2. the poet describes about the bride inside the palanquin. whoever can clarify please write to me.
