Hot And Cold

A woman who my mother knows
Came in and took off all her clothes.

Said I, not being very old,
'By golly gosh, you must be cold!'

'No, no!' she cried. 'Indeed I'm not!
I'm feeling devilishly hot!'

  • this sounds a bit like the change of life that women go through.. course that could just be me.. but that's how it sounds.. especially in the last two lines. Love the rhyme

Well it depends, how old are you? I don't want to corrupt a minor, lol. Kidding aside, I guess you could look at this poem from a slight sexual standpoint or just from a more innocent one, that she is a bit of a prankster...or it's about menopause.

Dahl is just having some fun.

I quite enjoyed this. It is a naughty poem but adds plenty more with the inclusion of an inquisitive child. I also felt I was an onlooker to the whole scene.

    Beautifully written.

Ah, this has that knifing Roald Dahl humor that I remember from the best of what I've read by him (mostly his children's books, although I also read something about a machine to write stories.) This is a great little poem -- the simple rhymes fit well with the child's perspective, and of course, "I'm feeling devilishly hot" is a perfect conclusion. This is a side of Roald Dahl that relatively few people, even among those who have read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, or at least seen the movie, have seen.

This is really amusing--I like how the author kept it simple, yet shed so much light on the "real" topic, hehehe.

You know I have a few books with just this sort of poetry. Mainly all of them are by this guy/gal named Anonymous. He must got rich off of those pieces.

It's a good piece. Short, to the point, and it doesn't lag.

Roald Dahl cracks me up. I haven't read this one before. He is a genius. What silly fun. Kind of disturbing, but in an innocent 'I don't know it's disturbing' kind of way. I wonder what he thought about this piece?

This is not what I would have expected from this man. But then again Shel Silverstein wrote A Boy Named Sue so what do I know...
