Sonnet XIV: If Thou Must Love Me

If thou must love me, let it be for nought
Except for love's sake only.  Do not say
"I love her for her smile—her look—her way
Of speaking gently,—for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and certes brought
A sense of pleasant ease on such a day" -
For these things in themselves, Beloved, may
Be changed, or change for thee,—and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so.  Neither love me for
Thine own dear pity's wiping my cheeks dry, -
A creature might forget to weep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!
But love me for love's sake, that evermore
Thou may'st love on, through love's eternity.

    This is brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
I sooo wish I could write like that.

Her words penned are not just heartfelt but logical, in a relationship; for love can sometimes sparkle supercifically.

I feel the meaning of her poem to be of love at its most durable - something of a choice, choosing and committing to love someone, so that even if their appearance, their manner changes - the ties are still strong. It seems a rare sort of love she is describing, but I think it is something everyone of us would want to possess.

"But love me for love's sake, that evermore
Thou may'st love on, through love's eternity."
This is the whole reality of true love rather divine love ___ love for the sake of love, where there is no material gain involved. this is more than beautiful

Love for love's sake? Only love's sake? If that were so, all other qualities would go down in value. We might as well love just anyone. I don't agree with this...at least, it seems impossible in this world.
