Everyone grumbled. The sky was grey.
We had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were nearing the end of a dismal day,
And there seemed to be nothing beyond,
THEN
Daddy fell into the pond!
And everyone's face grew merry and bright,
And Timothy danced for sheer delight.
"Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!
He's crawling out of the duckweed."
Click!
Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee,
And doubled up, shaking silently,
And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft
And it sounded as if the old drake laughed.
O, there wasn't a thing that didn't respond
WHEN
Daddy fell into the pond!
We had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were nearing the end of a dismal day,
And there seemed to be nothing beyond,
THEN
Daddy fell into the pond!
And everyone's face grew merry and bright,
And Timothy danced for sheer delight.
"Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!
He's crawling out of the duckweed."
Click!
Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee,
And doubled up, shaking silently,
And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft
And it sounded as if the old drake laughed.
O, there wasn't a thing that didn't respond
WHEN
Daddy fell into the pond!

Just like the kids today.
Always complaining that they are bored or laughing at the mishaps of their elders. Nothing has changed in a 101 years.
-
Nothing like the unexpected to liven up a day. The contrast quickly changes here from one of drab, grumbling to sheer joy...just shows you, who needs video games and computers to have fun...well me, but, umm, never mind...

To Guest Alannah.
As with most of the poems here at Oldpoetry our research team has tried to give brief details of the lives of each of the poets.
All you need do is click on the name under the picture at the top right of the poem and you will see what has been written (in the case by GypsyDreamer)

I was looking through some old photos when I found one of me in Primary school reciting this poem for a contest (and I won 1st prize!) I'm glad I found the verse here and am looking forward to teaching my son when he's a little older. -
Another treasure fondly remebered. I must have read this out loud a million times to my children when they were young and their children too...

I read this poem for the first time in Kindergarten, and I have been wondering where I could find it again. It was always my favorite. -
funny and interesting

This poem amazes me. I think of The highway man and this poem and they are so different, being written in the same year. I like this poem, because it shows the "not so serious" side of Noyes, not his religious and serious side. -
Dady fell in to the pond

This poem was the first thing that ever interested my son in reading and poetry. At the tender age of 5 he thought this was hilarious! Took the book to school, and read it for the class! It gave him a lifelong interest in books and reading. This may not be of interest to you?? But as soon as I saw the poem again I was transported back years! HAPPY DAYS!! Many thanks Chris -

I like the THEN and the WHEN to follow the movement of summary, from a frayed day to a flayed one that could be for play though! -

Amazing
As " there wasn't a thing that didn't respond
WHEN

This is very funny and melodious...very simple, light and sweet poem.

So very easy to read, and as much a delight today as it was when I used to read it to my own children.Brilliant. -
My dad used to recite this in the car - well, the garbled version he could remember, anyway, so lots of memories behind this piece.

I would guess this is a send-up on that ghastly old creep Thomas Hardy's poem "The Darkling Thrush."

Put me in mind of an old English slap-stick movie - standing in the pond with weed hanging off ears etc. and the ducks going crazy at the intrusion. Lovely poem - lighthearted and laughable.

I first came across this poem 12 years ago in an anthology of childrens poetry and instantly fell about laughing, since that day there hasn't been a month go by when one of my children haven't insisted that I read this to them, and even now it still makes me smile.
