The sweet juices of your mouth
are like castles bathed in honey.
I've never had it done so gently before.
You have put a circle of castles
around my penis and you swirl them
like sunlight on the wings of birds.

Would it be wrong of me to be the dissenting voice? Probably, ah well.
I guess I should preface it by stating I like much of Brautigan's fiction, where he can expand a theme like this poem's and make it have more than a sophomoric tone. The piece, looking at it from 2008, seems dated. Themes rooted in a generation, attempting to liberate sexuality, social mores, ideas, emotions and such which were too often repressed by convention. As an example of that era I'd give it some worth, but to stand on it's own, I have my doubts.
I think it's a good example of its time, though maybe that is a stereotypical view, but I'm not prepared to spread praise too liberally on a poem that doesn't seem to have universal and timeless qualities. I'd prefer to keep things in perspective.
I'm sure I'm just not liberated enough...or maybe my "60's" moment has passed, but I find the poem pretty much bland and uninspired, devoid of the one thing that I always found intriguing about Brautigan's fiction...his ironic/satiric wit.
But that is the good thing about writing, it shows us as much about the writer and his world as it does about us and our own world. I find the poem fairly pedestrian, while others find it original or masterful...and it is part of what makes reading poetry worthwhile. -
masterpiece pure and simple ... every writer who has ever tried to write about sexual intercourse, the act itself, has tried to write this poem .. if you don't know what this is about you should probably read more like it ... eventually you will become very happy

Sounds like the first taste of oral gratification, or the first time of sexual fornication or at least the first time where pleasure seemed to be the main option of content. I am sure, by the title and by the poem itself, that it wasn't a 'virgin' arena at all.
Yeah, I am thinking it's gratification of oral pleasure. And on that note I find it to be quite sensual.
A good piece that Brautigan has written here.

A gentle and touching eroticism...not like some of the harsher things done by other beat poets. I love Richard Brautigan. He is my number one influence. A genius in every sense of the word. More people should read his work. I guess I should be happy that he is so unknown, since it enables me to write my things without fear of someone suddenly thinking I am plagiarising (which I am not.) I am so glad to find his work here and I will visit it often for inspiration and for the sheer pleasure of it. Anybody else out there who loves Brautigan is invited to give me a shout. I will be very happy to hear from you and to read some of your work.
