Annabel Lee

It was many and many a year ago,
         In a kingdom by the sea,
   That a maiden there lived whom you may know
         By the name of ANNABEL LEE;
   And this maiden she lived with no other thought
         Than to love and be loved by me.

   I was a child and she was a child,
         In this kingdom by the sea;
   But we loved with a love that was more than love-
         I and my Annabel Lee;
   With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
         Coveted her and me.

   And this was the reason that, long ago,
         In this kingdom by the sea,
   A wind blew out of a cloud, chilling
         My beautiful Annabel Lee;
   So that her highborn kinsman came
         And bore her away from me,
   To shut her up in a sepulchre
         In this kingdom by the sea.

   The angels, not half so happy in heaven,
         Went envying her and me-
   Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
         In this kingdom by the sea)
   That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
         Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee.

   But our love it was stronger by far than the love
         Of those who were older than we-
         Of many far wiser than we-
   And neither the angels in heaven above,
         Nor the demons down under the sea,
   Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
         Of the beautiful Annabel Lee.

   For the moon never beams without bringing me dreams
         Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
   And the stars never rise but I feel the bright eyes
         Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
   And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
   Of my darling- my darling- my life and my bride,
         In the sepulchre there by the sea,
         In her tomb by the sounding sea.

    It is likely, in forethought reflections here, that "Anabella Lee" is the muse that drove Nabokov to his "Lolita." Just considering the paragraph that drives its first page through, I think the homage is a lucid thing--through and through:

    "Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, exhibit number one is what the seraphs, the misinformed, simple, noble-winged seraphs, envied. Look at this tangle of thorns."

    Respectively,

    Its a weird one

    Yes...this poem is seen to be very disturbing..just read it in class and discovered weird things. Yes he loved her but did she love him back.. she died but he still slept beside her..what a freak. Like he wouldnt let her go. of course he was kinda crazy this man...not so much of a love story as a stalker keeping the body of a dead girl of whom he loved...:s

    I have met this sensible and great poem just a couple of months ago in the spanish village of Tolosa, where every year one of the best choir competitions is held. A young musician called Eva Ugalde has written a lovely and also tender music for this poem which, I am sure you all Poe lovers would be delighted to hear. If you are interested, just send me an email and I'll try to send it to you. Happy new year to all of you and keep poetry up!!

    It\'s a beautiful poem n I like it. It shows a different side of Poe.

    Personally I think this poem was beautiful. I think that Poe wrote it based of Virginia and a women named Annabelle Lee Ravenel. It's differen then most of Poe's work, which I'm also a very big fan of. This poem shows a different side to Poe. I've always thought of him as a literary genuis and this is what I mean when I say that.

    I have always loved this poem, its so heartfelt with so much emmotion put into it. You can tell by this poem that he loved this girl so depicted in the story. I wish that when i get older can write half as good as him, though it looks doubtful. Anyway this poem was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo good, i think i'm gonna add it to my poem book, just to acknowledge him as one of the great poem writers for all time. Anyway good poem, hope to read more of his work before todays end.

    A great poem and love story. Food for thought.... Do you think that Poe might be saying that this young man was finally giving up is life to be with his beloved Annabel Lee? "I lie down by the side of my darling my life and my bride." He was so heart broken that he could take it no longer. Comments

    I always thought that Poe specialised in dark/morbid writes. This piece was a refreshing revelation.

    TO be honest, and I am rather embarrassed to say this, but this is actually the first poem I have read of his. I have heard one, "quoth the raven." I think it was called. But can't say I have read any up until now.

    I've always liked this particular work of Poe's. And it does leave room for a lot of possible interpretations. Being the romantic, I prefer to believe that he was overcome with grief with the loss of his Annabelle Lee and loved her forever, as the poem suggests.
    However, with a shift in the imagination, I can easily interpret it in a rather morbid way as well.

    The poem itself is beautiful, in spite of the over dramatization.

    I'm not much of a Poe lover, but this is actually a nice poem. It says so much in it's simplicity, and that is what makes it great. The repetition of Annabel Lee shows that she was always on his mind.

    This is my fav. poem of all times. It has so much meaning to it. I had to inturpret it once, and it surprised me how much it can mean. It showed his love for his wife so truely, and thats why i love it so. He showed so much feeling in this work (of course all of his work is powerfully written.) its very sad and yet you can't feel sad because of the way he wrote it. the way he let it flow made it sound like such a sweet poem.

    I love this poem..gosh it's so heartfelt. I sang a version of it in my choir a few years ago...I was so excited. Wouldn't it be just grand if everyone could be loved by someone this much? The world would be SUCH a better place.

    Luv It

    I agree with all of the commments; this is a truly artistic poem. It shows Poe's pain after his wife died, in 1847, and how two years later he died from the despair that began to rule his life after her death. A beautiful example of what most people will never experience in a lifetime.

    It sounds like he murdered her...jus a thought.
    "Yes!- that was the reason (as all men know,
    In this kingdom by the sea)
    That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
    Chilling and killing my Annabel Lee."
    That line right there makes it sound like he's givin himself an excuse so he wont feel guilty bout it.
    "And neither the angels in heaven above,
    Nor the demons down under the sea,
    Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
    Of the beautiful Annabel Lee."

    That makes it sound like he would do ANYTHING to keep her from leaving, you know goin into somone elses arms. There are more hints in there of it. Im not saying im right at all, jus another view on the writing.

    Breath Taking

    This piece is so haunting and beautiful at the same time. To have loved so deeply,and have it lurched away so quickly. Love like that is so rare. I don't think I've ever seen anything the likes of it before. I Guess that's what makes it truly romantic...Here is a man I would love to sit and talk with.

    Great!!!!!

    This is by far my favorite Edgar Allen Poe work!! He shows such raw emotion. I love the way he is so dedicated to her even after she was dead. I read this poem in the 8th grade and have read it every year since then because I love it that much!!!

    its very...moving. it really makes you envy her. just the way he is still faithful even after she dies; very tragic and yet it gives you a sense of hope that there is a good guy out there that will literally love you forever.

    This is my favorite work of poetry, and for my literature class we had to interrpret the meaning of it, and there was so much to it, I don't even remember it all. But it was so powerfully written, and at the same time, so powerfully sad and such a tragic thing. But this is very good.

    One of his most haunting pieces. I like it for the story and dislike for the over dramatizing. Still, it is an excellent example of tragedya bit along the threads of Romeo and Juliet, but a lot more like "Heirate Mich", which is a song. They both have the same tone and story to them. Ah, I think I have had an epiphany..

    I would love to write a parody off of this one, and may do it someday. Think tho if I do it now people would throw stones or bullets at me at great speeds.

    I mean, it is a great piece, but, even then I think the form and essence of it was a bit over-played and I think even Poe would have had agreed with me.

    A good piece here.

    I always thought Poe a better prose writer than poet. He always seems to be harping on the same themes (grief, loss, depression, etc) and he really doesn't DO all that much with rhyme or rhythm. Reading Poe makes me feel too often like I'm riding a train - the same even, unvaried, meter and rhyme.

    this poem and somany others of Edgarallan poe remind me of what my life was like after my aunt ( who was like a mother to me), died from cansur. my life was so dark and dismal that i was in a little world of my own and no one could ever get in. So in a way he reminds me of me in a life i once had that isn't there any more so I read his poems and i feel a sence of relief when i read this poem.
