Father And Child

She hears me strike the board and say
That she is under ban
Of all good men and women,
Being mentioned with a man
That has the worst of all bad names;
And thereupon replies
That his hair is beautiful,
Cold as the March wind his eyes.

    Being forbidden to see a member of the opposite sex has always made them more attractive. We are deliberately not told why the man 'has the worst of all bad names'. He could have been a crook or a serial seducer of young girls; alternatively, he could have been an anti-British rebel or an atheist.

    A father angry with his daughter who is 'under ban/Of all good men and women' ie disapproved of by all respectable people, because she is being connected with a man that has the 'worst' of all reputations. He is so angry he 'strikes the board' ie bangs the table. She responds to this anger by saying his hair is beautiful, which might indicate she has no concern for what others think, but she adds that his eyes are 'cold as the March wind'. An indication that she recognises in this man something that is worrying, dangerous even. It is not the description of someone totally unaware of faults in their beloved. Even so the feeling of the poem is that she is not going to listen to her father.

    Hmm, very thought provoking this one, sounds like she is with a man that is disapproved of, not only by her father, but by everyone, as he has a bad name, the worst a man could have it's said, and it sounds like she likes him for his eyes and his hair.......

    Sanity.

    Is he talking about the bans of marriage? And sounds like the father does not like this man much. Short, to the point. I love the last line.
