Perhaps some day the sun will shine again,
And I shall see that still the skies are blue,
And feel once more I do not live in vain,
Although bereft of You.
Perhaps the golden meadows at my feet
Will make the sunny hours of spring seem gay,
And I shall find the white May-blossoms sweet,
Though You have passed away.
Perhaps the summer woods will shimmer bright,
And crimson roses once again be fair,
And autumn harvest fields a rich delight,
Although You are not there.
Perhaps some day I shall not shrink in pain
To see the passing of the dying year,
And listen to Christmas songs again,
Although You cannot hear.'
But though kind Time may many joys renew,
There is one greatest joy I shall not know
Again, because my heart for loss of You
Was broken, long ago.

What a fantastic poem- I don't believe anyone that says this inst afeeble poem has thoroughly read through and studied it closely. It's obvious that she's mourning for her loss, but she portrays it in shuch a beautiful way, unline anything I'ver ever read before. Bravo. This poem isn't given the credit it deserves! -

For anyone more interested on the matter, read "Letters from a Lost Generation". It's a massive collection of the letters sent between Vera, Roland, Vera's brother Edward and many more. The way she heard about his death was quite crushing. It was on the day that he was to come home. Vera was in the hotel where they were to meet, when her sister called her and told her that Roland was dead. -
Heart Warming
For everyone who has lost a loveone. Very charming read. Very touching. I really enjoyed this read. Brought back memories of my dear sweet mom. Brought back strong memories of holidays and vacation trips. -
I can relate to the poem

I know that 'prehaps' was writern about Vera's fiance, Roland, but I think that anyone who has lost a loved one (like I just have) can relate to it. -

i find this poem extremely heart felt.
it shows the raw emotion, and when i heart it in a presentation about remembrance day i almsot cried. it is simple and to the point. -
Perhaps not brilliant or amazing though it is in a simplistic way. This stanza is especially poignant because it is that time of the year when we miss them most.
Perhaps some day I shall not shrink in pain
To see the passing of the dying year,
And listen to Christmas songs again,
Although You cannot hear.'

by the way, sadly her fiance & many family friends also died in the trenches so her brother's death may have been the final tragedy for her. she too was out there at the front as a nurse
-
as i understand it, VB wrote this following the death of her brother during WW1. a lovely tribute

R.A.L.
R.A.L. was Vera Brittain's fiancé, killed in the trenches in 1915. I believe he was a good friend of her brother.

This is a moving and intensely personal poem. I assume it was written because the poet's fiance had been killed and in this way it reflects the despair and sadness engendered by war. When I read it I wish I had been able to meet the poet
-
i like this poem that vera Brittain has wrote im doing it at school and i think its a very good poem.

Perhaps so, perhaps not.
I like this. I do not think it is amazing, but it is pretty good.
