Limerick: There was a Young Lady of Niger

There was a young lady of Niger
Who smiled as she rode on a tiger;
They returned from the ride
With the lady inside,
And the smile on the face of the tiger.

Notes

It has been claimed that Lear wrote this Limerick, however it is attributed by most sources to Monkhouse or to the famous Anon.

It was written by Ogden Nash, who also brought us such things as:

The trouble with a kitten is that
    Eventually it becomes a cat.

    And...

I think that I shall never see
A billboard lovely as a tree
In fact unless the billboards fall
I may never see a tree at all

At least that problem was taken care of by Lady Bird Johnson!

    MOD MESSAGE
It has also been attributed to Edward Lear, A.N.Other, Anon but, as the note says, most sources seem to agree on Monkhouse

    PRONUNCIATION

How do we today pronounce the name of an African state of Niger - as 'Niger' to rhyme with 'tiger' or [naidjer]?

("Ny-jur" according to Googling "niger" pronounciation-Old Poetry Staff)

Surely when reading a poem we should pronounce it as the writer intended and not according to present day customs. This is especially true with rhymes as to do otherwise would seriously hamper the true enjoyment of the poem.

This Limerick, or a version of it, was used in the John Wayne movie "In Harm's Way"

My translation: Малолетка-зассыха из Нигра Оседлала с улыбкою тигра... Прискакали, смотри! - Где зассыха? - Внутри! А улыбка на морде у тигра.

I was given this poem and told there was a moral and I was to write a my impression of what that moral was. I won the contest but there were a lot of funny and thought provoking translations. try it, it's a lot of fun.
