Behold, the grave of a wicked man,
And near it, a stern spirit.
There came a drooping maid with violets,
But the spirit grasped her arm.
"No flowers for him," he said.
The maid wept:
"Ah, I loved him."
But the spirit, grim and frowning:
"No flowers for him."
Now, this is it —
If the spirit was just,
Why did the maid weep?

Why?

The man who had died was still a human. We may not like what the person has done, but still care for the person. She loved the person not his deeds. We do not know her relationship w/ this man, but can we see what her realities were? Maybe she was his mother, a mother will always love her child, even if her child did horrific things. Maybe he was the father of her children, who will always be a part of her life. Maybe he was her big brother who had protected her from their abusive father, who took the brunt of the abuse which directed him in the wicked course. Maybe we just need to understand that she grieves, and comfort her for her loss.
