at dusk
i often climb
to the peak of kugami.
deer bellow,
their voices
soaked up by
piles of maple leaves
lying undisturbed at
the foot of the mountain.

Simple with a powerful perspective. It's a pity I cannot enjoy the original.

We all need enlightenment at some time in our life. Some times when we feel bleak and weary and can see no further than today - that's when we need it; to enable us to move forward, to understand life and the world around us and to enable us to keep on growing spiritually and intellectually.
Taigu Ryokan can see the beauty in the world of his time and through the beauty of his words (translated though they may be) we are ‘enlightened’ by him.

Wow. That was stunningly beautiful. I love the imagery of the voices being soaked up by the maple leaves. I understood that to mean that since deer are such silent creatures, their sounds can be heard only through the nature that surrounds them.

great imagery in this. it makes one feel as if they were there among the autumn leaves seeing a gift from God. this poem has a calming effect. -
I could feel the resonance of the Deer, their calls being muffled by the leaves, time standing still.
