Black And Gold

Everything is black and gold,
Black and gold, to-night:
Yellow pumpkins, yellow moon
Yellow candlelight;

Jet-black cats with golden eyes
Shadows black as ink,
Firelight blinking in the dark
With a yellow blink

Black and gold, black and gold
Nothing in between-
When the world turns black and gold
Then it's Halloween!

I learned this poem in 1954. I repeated it in everyhouse we trick or treated. Back then we had to perform. Not this trick or treat only stuff. Oh, and we said thank you too.

I was go glad to find this poem. I was trying to recite it to my grandson and could only remember the first verse. That shows how very long it has been since I was in grade school.

but for the life of me I couldn't remember the 3rd and fourth lines of the second stanza! I'm glad I searched online for the poem today, because it brought back fond childhood memories of Halloween.

I remember this poem from third grade. The teacher wrote the last stanza on the blackboard and we had to memorize it.

Simple, beautiful. And quite topical since it'll soon be Halloween. A good poem of the day I would venture to guess. Do we ever have themed poems of the day? That would be fun I think, to have them all be about Halloween.

The poems more about the beauty of the time of year than about the holiday I think.

My mum taught my siblings and I this song, and when we went trick-or-treating she would have us sing it to the people who came to the door. It's definitely a favorite.

We learned this poem as a song in elementary school. Every year at Halloween, my sister and I (both now in our 40's) phone one another and sing it, then say goodbye. I have taught the song to all my children. I hope they pass is on to their children, when they have them.

    Black and Gold

I have loved this poem for many years. In 1963, I memorized it, and recited it in our Halloween pagent at Dennis McKenna elementary school in Oxnard, Ca. I have recited it to my children, thier friends, and now my grand children. Each year as we finish carving our pumpkins, we turn out the lights, and as we light each candle and the room becomes illuminated in black and gold, I recite this poem. It is a fun ritual at our house, one my children and grand children will carry on for many years. Thank you so much

    Reciting Black and Gold

    From guest Shelly Shupp (contact)
My sister, Cindy, and I had to learn this poem when we attended Remington Elementary School. Whew, that was a few years ago and neither one could remember all of the lines. Finally, I can send it to her and say, "I was right: 'Black and gold, black and gold (Nothing in between) - we both were unsure of that line. Thank you!
