Daddy Fell into the Pond

Everyone grumbled.  The sky was grey.
We had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were nearing the end of a dismal day,
And there seemed to be nothing beyond,
                      THEN
          Daddy fell into the pond!

And everyone's face grew merry and bright,
And Timothy danced for sheer delight.
"Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!
He's crawling out of the duckweed."
                Click!

Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee,
And doubled up, shaking silently,
And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft
And it sounded as if the old drake laughed.
O, there wasn't a thing that didn't respond
                      WHEN
          Daddy fell into the pond!

    Pinto Pony Memories

The poem does remind me when we got our first pony and Mother was demonstrating how to properly ride it. The pony assessed the huge weight that was on her back, trotted down to the frog pond and rolled over. We probably laughed. We probably didn't get any supper.

      For Guest Skate and others

The vast majority of our poets have passed away at least 50 years ago. In the case of Alfred Noyes, he died in 1958.
We try to include the date in the details on the right of each poem.

    Delightful!

  • One of my favorite poets. Funny how this simple write of a a short and simple happening still bears the same mark one finds while reading his more complicated works like The Highwayman.

I don't think 'everyone' responed There is no mention of Daddy coming out, soaking wet, laughing. this is a wonderful poem which children can easily relate to which is a plus for me.
the ducks all quacked as if they were daft - this is top scoring line - hilarious!

I have to quote a poem avery two weeks for a home school group: by the way we can spell; "school" anyways, one week I did this poem because I am definitely a comedian, but the week I did it, it was the only week out of the year that my dad came to watch and now I am listing it for my favorite poem for my 8th Grade lit.

Just like the kids today. Always complaining that they are bored or laughing at the mishaps of their elders. Nothing has changed in a 101 years.

Nothing like the unexpected to liven up a day. The contrast quickly changes here from one of drab, grumbling to sheer joy...just shows you, who needs video games and computers to have fun...well me, but, umm, never mind...

      To Guest Alannah.
As with most of the poems here at Oldpoetry our research team has tried to give brief details of the lives of each of the poets.
All you need do is click on the name under the picture at the top right of the poem and you will see what has been written (in the case by GypsyDreamer)

I was looking through some old photos when I found one of me in Primary school reciting this poem for a contest (and I won 1st prize!) I'm glad I found the verse here and am looking forward to teaching my son when he's a little older.

    From guest Eltice Katt (contact)
This poem amazes me. I think of The highway man and this poem and they are so different, being written in the same year. I like this poem, because it shows the "not so serious" side of Noyes, not his religious and serious side.

Dady fell in to the pond

    From guest Chrissie (contact)
This poem was the first thing that ever interested my son in reading and poetry. At the tender age of 5 he thought this was hilarious! Took the book to school, and read it for the class! It gave him a lifelong interest in books and reading. This may not be of interest to you?? But as soon as I saw the poem again I was transported back years! HAPPY DAYS!! Many thanks Chris

Put me in mind of an old English slap-stick movie - standing in the pond with weed hanging off ears etc. and the ducks going crazy at the intrusion. Lovely poem - lighthearted and laughable.

I first came across this poem 12 years ago in an anthology of childrens poetry and instantly fell about laughing, since that day there hasn't been a month go by when one of my children haven't insisted that I read this to them, and even now it still makes me smile.
