Everyone grumbled. The sky was grey.
We had nothing to do and nothing to say.
We were nearing the end of a dismal day,
And there seemed to be nothing beyond,
THEN
Daddy fell into the pond!
And everyone's face grew merry and bright,
And Timothy danced for sheer delight.
"Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!
He's crawling out of the duckweed."

And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft

Pinto Pony Memories
The poem does remind me when we got our first pony and Mother was demonstrating how to properly ride it. The pony assessed the huge weight that was on her back, trotted down to the frog pond and rolled over. We probably laughed. We probably didn't get any supper.

I don't think 'everyone' responed
There is no mention of Daddy coming out, soaking wet, laughing. this is a wonderful poem which children can easily relate to which is a plus for me.

This poem was the first thing that ever interested my son in reading and poetry. At the tender age of 5 he thought this was hilarious! Took the book to school, and read it for the class! Put me in mind of an old English slap-stick movie - standing in the pond with weed hanging off ears etc. and the ducks going crazy at the intrusion. Lovely poem - lighthearted and laughable.

I first came across this poem 12 years ago in an anthology of childrens poetry and instantly fell about laughing, since that day there hasn't been a month go by when one of my children haven't insisted that I read this to them, and even now it still makes me smile.
