I believe he is speaking of his pain and experience of losing his parents as a child...going on into life not knowing as all other children know childhood. Loving all he loved alone. I believe that is reference to his parents. His unanswered questions are his mystery, his unknowing of how his life should have been. The later verse talking of his alcoholism and how his life went. I believe it is a very wonderfully written piece. No wonder to this day he is so very well known.
